1/5=1/5...how do i get numbers instead of fractions...help

whenever i do a division problem like 1 divided by five i get 1/5 how do i get a decimal #....i have the ti89 titanium

If you press the [DIAMOND] key before pressing [ENTER], you should get an approximation for your answers. If you want all answers in decimal format instead of exact format, you can change the setting by pressing [MODE], [F2] (for page 2), and then go down to "Exact/Approx" and change the setting to "Approx".

If you need exact answers some of the time and decimal answers some of the time, you can also choose the "Auto" setting. Basically, whenever the input contains a decimal point, a decimal answer will be given, otherwise an exact answer will be given. So you could enter 1/5 to work with the fraction, and 1./5 to work with a decimal value.

You can also type in approx(1/5) to get a decimal result for specific calculations. The approx() function returns a decimal result of the expression inside.
