I saw a link to something about this in another post, but it was a dead link.
I have the normal Ti-89. When I turn on the calculator, the screen is half black. If I change the contrast, it does not help me see anything anymore. I used to be able to read the calculator by adjusting the contrast to barely make out the numbers on both sides, but now that doesn't even work for me.
I guess i should add that the screen is vertically split, and the right side works fine. The calculator is about two years old and has suffered no water damage.
any help you can give me is fine. Id even be willing to open the calc and take a look, if i can ever find a blasted t6 screwdriver. |

Hi Timmeur,
Welcome to TI-89 Forums.
I'm not sure what dead link you are referring to, but I will try and track it down, because I think I know what post you are talking about. I helped a friend with this exact same issue, and I'm not a hardware guru so we didn't take the calculator apart. However, I noticed that by putting pressure on the edge of the screen (not the LCD, but the border) in the right spot, it is possible to minimize the darkened area of the screen to make it more visible. I don't know of any permanent fixes.
If you would, please tell me if you have run any games or other ASM programs recently that might have contributed to this issue. I've heard about it happening a few times, but not very often, and I might be able to gather evidence for figuring out the root cause if I can gather details about the events leading up to a half-black screen. Thank you!
Hope I have helped you in some way!

Thank you for the welcome. I did not run any games on my ti-89. I dont even think I ever got it properly connected to the computer. I will go get some batteries and try out your temporary fix. I love my ti-89 so much more than my 83 plus. Its just sad that I found my 83 in a phone booth over 5 years ago, and it works perfectly, and I bought my 89 new 2 years ago, and its been messing up on me. I can't say that I did too much as far as software is concerned on my 89. I usually just use it for my physics/math problems. Hope this is enough evidence for you. If you need to know anything else, just reply and I'll take a look at the topic hopefully sometime in the near future. By the way, heres the dead link I was talking about:

I found it on the 3rd page of this General Support topic.
