I've tried now on three or four different threads to reply to topics and even tried quoting people as a workaround, but I keep getting kicked back to the Index. If anyone has any ideas why... that would be very helpful.

It looks like you got it figured out. It may be helpful to others if you could post what was wrong, and how you fixed it in case other users may have the same problem.
