Writing Programs on the Computer

I spent most of last year writing programs on the calculator, an arduous task at the best of times, especially as they got bigger. Unfortunately, the school reclaimed that one, and rather than have to do that again, I'd rather be able to write them on the computer. What formatting do I need to use/what program(s) do I need to make files in .89p format? I have the link cable and TI Connect 1.6.
