Hi khoover,
Welcome to TI-89.org Forums!
Although the TI-86 calculator is pretty advanced as far as TI calculators go, it still uses the Zilog Z80 microprocessor of the TI-83 family of calculators. The TI-89 is the first calculator to make use of the newer, more advanced Motorola 68K microprocessor, which is incompatible with the Zilog Z80 instruction set. Further, the TI-86's BASIC instruction set and mathematical capabilities is very similar to the TI-83 family yet very different from the TI-89 series. You will have to do the conversion by hand.
There should be a lot of functions that are similar between the TI-86 and TI-89, but there will be a lot of familiar operations that cannot be easily intermixed between the two calculators. Depending on what you are trying to accomplish, translating the program may be very easy or extremely difficult--just asking what changes need to be made is too vague.
If you could post your BASIC program on this forum (providing its not too large, like more than 50 lines) I can give you a better idea on what types of changes you will need to make to the program. If nothing else, you could try sending the TI-86 program to your computer via TI-Connect, then copy the contents of the program into a new TI-89 program variable, and finally send that back to your TI-89 calculator. You will probably have some errors but you might be able to work through them one by one using the error messages that pop up to guide your translation.
Hope this helps!
