|
|
Ok, was doing some basic math this afternoon with my 89t and ran into a problem.
I was on the [home] screen and punched in:
[2nd] [^] [X] [3] [6] [enter]
in an attempt to do "Pi" times 36
the answer it gave was just that,
"Pi"x36
I cannot for the life of me find any where what I am doing wrong in trying to get the ti-89t to actually solve the problem and give me a numerical answer. I have tried google, and the manual but have not found an answer. I have just picked up a calculator again recently after 15 years of not using one and needless to say i think I am just missing a command that is obvious to others and not to me. Thanks in advance for your help.[/list][/code] |

the default setting of the calculator of giving exact or approximate answer is "auto". you can change this setting on the mode menu (press the key "mode", and scroll down to exact/approx. setting) . usually, "auto" setting will return you an exact answer. if you want an approximate i.e. numeric, you can use 1 of the following way:
1. change the mode to approximate. you will always get and numeric answer.
2. if you are under "auto", you can put a .(decimal point) after a number. ie if you type 6*(pi) you will get 6(pi), if you type 6.*(pi) you will get 19.84..........
3. under any mode setting, press (diamond)+enter will always return an approxiate answer. |

This is in my opinion the easiest/best choice. |

| Thank you... as soon as I read "under any mode setting, press (diamond)+enter will always return an approxiate answer” I smacked myself in the head for not realizing that. Used to the old in accurate "Pi" buttons that were just approximations! Also, the decimal after the number tip excellent... I have been to many, many sites looking for a good list of different basic tips like that listed in some sort of "cheat sheet" form like the old calcs had that slipped in between the case and calc. Any suggestions of compiled lists of these handy commands/tricks? |

| Perhaps it's time for a new page on TI-89.org. I think I'll start a new thread... |

I always thought that leaving it set in Auto was the best. It is easy to throw a decimal in somewhere. |

I think he meant that you leave it in auto, and then press [diamond]+[enter] whenever you want an approximate answer. |

I know what he meant. Alls I'm saying is that I think it is easier to put a decimal in somewhere than to reach up and push the diamond before enter. Less travel for the finger. You do know that a decimal in Auto setting will result in an approximate answer, right? |
