Proper square root entry

Can you please tell me the proper entry to get the answer to this problem: I need to get the square root of (x-8)^2.

On another math related note, can the TI-89 solve a problem such as this:

x-3/x - -8/x-1 / x+1/x + x+1/x-1

((x-8)^2)^.5 is x - 8. You should be able to do that without a calculator. It's very basic.
