How do you write subscripts on the TI-89?

This is driving me nuts. I can't find a single source on the net explaining how to do this. I can do superscripts... just not subscripts. I'm going crazy trying to figure this out! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Here is an example of how to use subscripts (on a TI-89) to display the letter "a" with a subscript of "1".

Example:

Type the following:

"a[1]"
