Hi everybody,

i was using the " Solve( " function in TI-89 TIT (home) and i inserted the function (* THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I TYPED IN *) :::::

solve(20=X(2),X)

i mean.. it should be 10 right?
but like it came up with the " memory error"

* I DID RESET MEMORY AND TRIED REINSTALLING OS <--lol
but none worked...

PLEASE TRY ON YOUR OWN CALCULATORS AND PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

AGAIN PLEASE POST YOUR OWN RESULTS AFTER TRYING THE SAME EXACT EQUATION!!!

I think what you are trying to solve is the same as:
20=X*2 right?
Or - 20 equals x times 2?

You need to write it as:
solve(20=x*2,x)
or
solve(20=x2,x)

Solve() is really a function.
Functions can not contain more than one pair of parenthesis.

I believe your syntax is wrong.

You should select solve then enter

(2*x =20, x) Since Solve gives you the left parentheses, you must enter the right one.

Or you can enter (2x =20, x) you may omit the *.

Or you can enter (2x-20 = 0, x)

All entries will yield x =10.

Good Luck,

Ed

Yes, or ((20=x(2)),x) These parentheses can be a little confusing. I start by making sure I have even sets (2 each) of rt. and left parentheses. Usually if there is a syntax problem, the problem is that you have one too few parenthesis at the very beginning. Until you get good at this, it helps to write the problem down on paper with parenthesis as you think you need to do for the calculator, then match up left and right pairs by connecting them up and over the top of your equation. dkw

You should get 10 also written exactly as you posted it. I do on my TI 89 Titanium. Memeory error might have nothing to do with the problem per se. I remove the 4 batteries, press down the ON for 30 sec., then reinsert the batteries and you should be good to go. What happens is the RAM gets used up as you work a lot of problems. If you programmed or downloaded a bunch of stuff, you may also need to go back to the programs and delete the ones you don't need at the moment. There is one other possibility: You are asking your calculator to perform an algebra equation, so you must be in the ALGEBRA program. If you are in something else, it might be searching and going through crazy stuff to try and solve an unsolvable problem. Some procedures only work when you are in specific programs. For example, if you don't enter the algebra program and just do a simple numbers math problem, you and get a fraction for an answer, you can then press Diamond, then Enter and it returns the decimal approximation. If you are in the algebra program, and try this, it doesn't work. Why? Because you have already told the calculator you want an exact answer, so asking for an approximation just gets your fraction back. dkw
