what do you get when you just put in x?

you could try clearing the variables.

You could also try placing a "*" between all letters

Good point. Remember that the TI-89 allows for more than just single character variables. Therefore xy is not variable x times variable y, it is variable xy.

i got the same problem.
for example:
if i want to derive the function y=x^2 i enter d(x^2,x) and it gives me the error: "Non-algebraic variable in expression"
BUT if i derive the function y=2*x i enter d(2*x,x) and it gives me the correct answer.
Can sb tell me how to calculate it correctly?
I got the TI-89 Titanium

Im near the end of my calc 3 class and bought the ti-89 titanium because everyone told me I would save time by using it to find Integrals. But when i follow the instructions in the manual to find the integral I get the error: 'Non-algebraic variable in expression'. Ive tried looking everywhere for an answer but couldn't find any answer on how to solve this problem. any help would be appreciated.

You might have a value stored to your variable...
Try going to F6 and clearing your variables a-z, that should help!
